This isn't working

I have always said that decorating a home doesn't happen overnight, but I am starting to lose.my.mind. B and I have declared this summer the one where we finally whip our backyard and deck into shape. We have a big backyard for our area and we don't utilize it as much as we should, partly because we don't have any outdoor furniture. So last month we started looking for an outdoor patio set, preferably one that sat 6 or more since we like to get drunk with friends entertain. But holy shit. Do you have any idea how much outdoor furniture costs?! It's a freakin boatload, especially if you care at all, even the slightest, about how it looks. I've searched everywhere, and I mean everywhere trying to find something, anything, that looks good and is within our price range. It's not working. I am turning into a Craigslist maniac, checking every hour 'just in case' something new pops up. No luck. I've scoured every store and website I know. Still nothing. I don't know what to do anymore. I complied a list of sets I like, but for some reason or another, won't quite work for us. Who am I kidding, they are all just so damn expensive that I can only admire from afar.

This set, from Target, is still one of our favorites. But seeing as it only seats four, and the chairs alone are close to $400, it just won't work for us. But man, it sure is purty.

Threshold™ Casetta Patio Dining Furniture Collection

West Elm, oh how I still love thee. You lure me in with your casual cool vibe and make me want to come to this party, any party, and dine on this lovely set. This would work for us, perfectly, but we'd have to take out a second mortgage on our home to pay for it. Hmmm....might be worth it. ;)

Wood-Slat Expandable Dining Collection

This isn't a whole set, but I am loving all weather wicker for our outdoor dining area. These chairs, from World Market, would be great but sadly, 6 would run us close to $900. Ouch!

This outdoor set, from Ikea, seems to be our best bet. While my heart was set on wicker, it just isn't in our price range right now. This set meets all our requirements: semi- modern, seats six, constructed from a non-wood material (I don't want to deal with fading, chips, or splinters) and is within our price range. I only wish the black/brown option was the same price.

FALSTER Table and 6 chairs IKEA Polystyrene slats are weather-resistant and easy to care for. Rustproof aluminum frame is both sturdy and lightweight.

So is there anything I've missed? Is there some store that I don't know of that sells super cheap outdoor furniture? Has anyone managed to score a great set on Craigslist? If so, I'm totally jealous, because all the outdoor sets on Chicago's look like they are straight out of the 80's.

  1. Did you try the American Sales Outlet store...in Tinely Park, near I80? What about garage sales...the furniture may need some work but you guys are so handy!!!!

    1. I haven't tried that yet. Thanks! I couldn't help but notice your ID name. My husband is a type 1 diabetic!

  2. Are you signed up for the World Market perks program? This morning I had an email with a 25% off coupon that starts tomorrow. That would definitely help a lot on a big purchase... Or even the 5% off you can get by having the Target Debit/Credit Card helps. Target has also been putting their outdoor stuff on sale online frequently. We bought an outdoor wicker couch from Target a couple of years ago. We waited until it was on sale, which helped. It still looks great and we love it. We've even been looking into the tables and chairs that are in the same line to replace our cheapo table and chairs we currently have. Good luck!

  3. This isn't going to help much unless you're willing to wait another summer, but in the fall the prices drop wildly. We got the West Elm table that you like a couple falls ago for next to nothing.

    1. I know-I keep thinking, "if we can just hold off until Fall." but I don't think we can wait any longer!

  4. I would advise you to buy something cheap even if it is ugly just to hold you over until you find something that you love and can afford. Spray paint and new seat covers would work wonders. Another thing you can do "just for now" is use folding table and chairs. Throw a table cloth (or a flat sheet that covers more) on it and no one will know what it is. If you have people over to drink wine in your back yard, they are not going to care what the table looks like.

  5. I feel your pain - we had the same issue last year but I managed to find a great set at JCPenney. I checked their choice this year and its piss poor. Not sure if you have an Old Time Pottery, Southeastern Salvage or Garden Ridge near you? All have terrible websites, but usually good stuff in store. Good luck!

  6. This may not be the style you're looking for, but an affordable outdoor table and benches came up on Jubilee Furniture's weekly listings, and with some new paint, I think they could be really nice. Scroll down to the reddish orange stuff. http://jubileefurniture.blogspot.com/2013/05/jubilee-furniture-weekly-update-for.html
